I haven't used this blog in a long time.
Today though in light in watching Donald Trump be elected president of this country I feel compelled to come back here because this will be too long for Twitter.
Last night I was watching the election results come in hoping to see Hillary Clinton become the 45th president of the United States. Slowly as it became clearer that Trump was going to win and the consequences of his election popped in my mind immediately.
First, the Affordable Care Act, President Obama's signature piece of legislation, is dead. With the GOP now controlling the White House for the next four years along with both houses of Congress a bill to repeal the ACA will be signed into law. This means millions of people who now have healthcare thanks to the ACA will lose it and the world of lifetime caps, rejection based on preexisting conditions, and medical bankruptcies will be the norm again.
Second, the Supreme Court will be a conservative stronghold for another generation putting protections like Roe v. Wade, what remains of the Voting Rights Act, and possibly the Civil Rights Act itself at rist of being completely wiped out.
Third, our allies overseas will not know if the U.S. will be at their side especially in Eastern Europe thanks to Trump's fascination with Russian president Vladimir Putin who has tanks ready to steamroll into the region.
Fourth, the economy will likely crash wiping out all the gains from the last eight years. Worldwide there are fears that a Trump presidency will cause a climate that makes the 2008 global recession seem like a picnic.
All of these factors were known consequences of a Trump victory as the election got closer. A normal person would assume that this would make a nation choose the alternative. However the manner in which he won made the reasoning behind it became very clear.
This election was visceral White rage aimed at a changing country. It was rage at seeing a Black man in President Obama sit in the Oval Office rather than just cleaning it. Most of all it was rage against seeing Blacks & Latinos in this country begin to overtly demand to be treated equally.
It was interesting to see something so obvious be avoided by White members of the media. The best example of this was Chris Matthews of MSNBC. A man who often boasts about being from the Philadelphia, Matthews kept trying to paint the action of White voters as 'economic anxiety.' That trope has been handy for White media members to dance around the fact that the sentiment of those voters almost solely about race.
But Black & Brown people knew this from the start and now we have seen White voters elect what might become the U.S. version of Adolph Hitler.
The coming war for the soul of the U.S. will be hard and in many ways a literal war. There has already been one defeat though, The phrase 'We' can no longer be used to describe 'Americans.' as a whole. Instead there are Whites, Blacks, Latinos, Asian, and Indigenous people living in a land called the United States.
All because of White rage that would rather kill this country than let Black & Brown people have an equal seat at the table.
